Description

This chest tomb, located approximately 2 meters south of the chancel of the Church of St Mary Magdalene, is dedicated to John Horton of Elliotts Hall, who died in 1817. It is constructed of ashlar stone on a pinkish-brown brick plinth and is designed in a late Neo-Classical style. The tomb measures approximately 1.75 meters high, 1 meter wide, and 2 meters long. It features a stepped plinth and a moulded base. Each long side has a central oval inscription panel framed within a rectangular border, adorned with fluted decoration in the spandrels, flanked by shorter rectangular panels. The short sides also have rectangular panels. The tomb is topped with a gently hipped slab that has shaped sides. It is also dedicated to Mary, the widow of John Horton, who died in 1855, as well as to John Horton who died in 1876 and Elizabeth, his wife, who died in 1867, and to John Horton who died in 1900. All the listed buildings in the churchyard form a group.
