Description

Thorn Cottage and Thornette are two houses dating to the 17th century, with subsequent additions from the 18th and 19th centuries, and a significant restoration in 1991. The houses are timber-framed with brick infill, built upon a rubble plinth, and arranged in a 2-unit plan, with a single-unit addition and a brick addition to the right end. They have a renewed tile roof with a brick end stack and a rear stack.

The exterior is two storeys high with a four-window front. There are two central entrances under a pentice, with 20th-century plank doors, and a further entrance with a glazed door to the right of centre. A renewed bay window with a hipped roof is to the left, and there are two renewed casement windows and a 20th-century window to the right end. On the first floor, there are two partly renewed windows to the left of centre with iron opening casements, and a small window to the right of centre with leaded glazing to a two-light casement. The left return is brick with a stack positioned off-centre to the right; the right return has a 20th-century entrance and windows. The left half of the building exhibits square framing with raised eaves, while the timber framing to the right has thinner scantlings.

The rear elevation is similar, featuring a brick central section next to a stack with a gathered-in shaft. There is a late 20th-century door and one window with a two-light casement and iron opening casement. Other windows have renewed casements, including two 20th-century gabled dormers.

Inside Thorn Cottage, features include chamfered beams, a fireplace with a bressumer, and a bread oven with an iron door.
