Description
Virginia Cottage is a house dating from the 17th century, which underwent extensive restoration in 1990. It features a timber-frame structure with plastered infill set on a rubble plinth, topped by a steeply pitched thatched roof with large brick end stacks, one of which extends to both the front and rear. The building has a two-unit plan and includes a 20th-century wing on the left with a tile roof.
The exterior is a single storey plus an attic and has two windows. The central entrance features a 20th-century door, with flanking windows that have 20th-century leaded casements. There is a small light for the fireplace at the right end, and the wing has a window with a leaded casement. The framing is square. At the rear, there is another entrance with a 20th-century door and flanking windows with 20th-century leaded casements. Two raking dormers feature earlier two-light leaded casements. The stack at the left end has a hipped offset with a tile roof and a small light. The 20th-century wing projects to the right.
Inside, the cottage is noted for its flag floor, exposed beams, and timber-framed cross walls. It also contains a 20th-century fireplace with a bressumer and a spiral staircase.
