Description
The properties Restharrow and Avondale comprise a row of three houses, two of which have now been combined. They date to the 17th century, with alterations made during the 18th century and in the late 20th century. The construction is primarily painted brick, with the right-hand end being timber-framed with painted brick infill set on a rubble plinth. The roof is tiled, with brick end stacks and one stack to the front of the ridge.
The houses are arranged over single storey and attic levels. Restharrow, on the left, features a 3-light casement window beneath a segmental arch, followed by a bay with wood mullioned and transomed windows. Avondale, on the right, has a bay with wood mullioned and transomed windows, then a 3-light and a 2-light casement window under segmental arches, and a timber-framed end section with a door and a 2-light casement window. Five gabled dormers are fitted with 2-light casements. A single-storey extension was added to the rear in the late 20th century.
The interior of Restharrow has not been inspected; however, Avondale features a small framed room to the front. Beyond this are two main rooms, separated by open fireplaces on each side. The room to the right appears to retain an original bressumer and 20th-century stonework. Other notable features include chamfered spine beams and joists, exposed pegged box framing in a partition wall, and a 20th-century staircase to the attic. In the attic, the original purlins are visible, and two trusses have been incorporated into partitions, with the tie beam cut to accommodate plank doors. A plastered ceiling obscures the original timber structure where principals are clasped and pegged at the apex. The roof features 20th-century rafters and a brick chimney massing within the timber frame, with original wattle and daub plaster infill.
