Description

The Phipps headstones, located approximately 17.5 metres north of the Church of St Mary in Preston on Stour, date from around 1700 and are made of ashlar. The headstone on the left commemorates Ann Phipps, who died in 1707. It features a shaped top with an inscribed cherub and a decorative border surrounding a scrolly inscription, although part of the verse is buried. The headstone on the right is dedicated to Hannah Phipps, who died in 1703 or 1704, and John Phipps, who died in 1690. This wider stone also has a shaped top and is damaged at the left end. It includes low relief decorations of a skull and skeleton, along with a well-preserved inscription that features verses.
