Description
The gates and gate piers, along with the churchyard wall enclosing the Church of St Mary in Preston on Stour, date from around 1750, with some early 19th-century rebuilding. The gates are likely the work of Nicholas Parris. The structure features ashlar and brick laid in Sussex bond, with 19th-century brick in Flemish bond, and includes wrought-iron gates. Each gate is flanked by rusticated piers that have moulded plinths, cornices, and ball finials, while the gates themselves are adorned with enriched wrought-iron side panels and an overthrow.
The wall to the north-east is 18th-century, featuring roll moulding on its chamfered ashlar coping, with some repairs from the 19th century. The wall to the south-east has extensive 19th-century repairs beneath the original coping and includes several small buttresses, with a completely 19th-century west end. The walls to the west and north-west are entirely from the 19th century, characterized by plainer chamfered coping.
