Description

This is a milepost located at Hoften's Cross in Cotton, dating from the mid to late 19th century. It is made of cast iron and has a triangular section with a chamfered top. The top face displays the inscription "HOFTEN'S / CROSS." The left side lists distances to various locations: "Froghall 3 ½ / CHEADLE 6 ½ / HANLEY 13 / STOKE 14 / NEWCASTLE 15 ½." The right side indicates the distance to Ashbourne as "ASHBOURNE 8 ¼."
