Description

No. 1 Bird Street is a house that was formerly a bank and is now a shop, built around 1820. It is designed in the Georgian style and constructed of stucco with a parapeted roof and a brick stack at one end. The building has an L-shaped plan and stands three storeys tall, featuring a six-window range with a single-storey wing to the right. The ground floor has a rusticated finish, with a sill band on the first floor, topped by a cornice and parapet, and a pediment on the left side. The entrance to the wing is marked by rusticated piers and an entablature, with inset ashlar antae and an iron grille with a gate.

The ground floor windows are topped with rusticated flat arches and contain plate glass sashes. The first-floor windows are framed by architraves with friezes and cornices, featuring balustraded aprons and 2/1-pane sashes. On the second floor, the windows are set within four-sided architraves and have 6-pane sashes. The left return facing The Friary has a four-window arrangement, with a round-headed entrance at the right end that includes fluted imposts, a bracketed cornice, and a rusticated arch above a timber tympanum leading to a six-panel door. The rear of the building features a pedimented gabled wing with a two-storey canted bay window above a 20th-century single-storey flat-roofed addition.
