Description
Two houses, dating from circa 1750, located in Lichfield and now used as shops. The buildings demonstrate a Georgian style with a six-window front. They are constructed of brick with a tile roof. The top of the front wall features a brick frieze and an elaborate timber cornice with decorative carvings (modillions), and the gables are coped. Modern shop fronts are present, flanking a likely 20th-century entrance with a doorcase and overlight to a six-panel door. The first-floor windows have flat brick arches above twelve-pane sash windows. However, the first two windows on the first floor have casement windows with a twelve-pane over nine-pane design. There are three dormers on the roof, two of which have twelve-pane sashes. A plaque indicates that the Bishop Newton of Bristol (1704-1782) was born at this location. The rear of the buildings features three gabled wings. The interior has been altered, but the roof retains its original trusses, with curved principals to the rear wings.
