Description

Number 10 Bird Street and Numbers 1 and 1A Market Street are a pair of shops and offices dating to around 1810. The building is constructed of brick with ashlar dressings, and has a tile roof. It is arranged in an L-shape.

The building is of Georgian style, and is three storeys high, with a four-window front. It has boxed eaves and ashlar quoins over a chamfered ashlar angle at the right end. The shop front to Number 1 has been altered in the late 19th century, featuring panelled pilasters, decorative brackets to the fascia and a 20th-century entrance and glazing. Number 10 has a late 20th-century shop front. The upper floor windows have sills and rubbed brick flat arches above plate glass, horned sashes to the first floor, and six-pane horned sashes to the second floor. The roof has two hipped skylights. There are two axial stacks.

The right return has a four-window range and a modillioned brick cornice to the right of a rebuilt gable. An entrance has an architrave and bracketed cornice over an overlight with decorative glazing bars to a six-panel door, situated between two 20th-century shop fronts. A blocked first-floor window is located at the left end. Number 1 originally housed a bust of Dr Johnson, which was removed in 1990.
