Description
17 Bird Street is a former house dating from the early to mid 18th century. It is constructed of brick with ashlar dressings and features a hipped tile roof with brick end stacks, showcasing an early Georgian style. The building stands three storeys high and has a symmetrical five-window range. It includes a cornice above the first floor and a top modillioned cornice.
The entrance is marked by a doorcase with an architrave featuring a triple key, panelled pilaster strips, and a consoled pediment, leading to paired two-panel doors. There are two shop windows adorned with panelled pilaster strips and consoled cornices, which have 20th-century glazing. On the first floor, the windows have panelled sills and shaped aprons, with shaped lintels that include keys and cornices above 6/9-pane sashes that have thick glazing bars. The attic storey features segmental-headed windows with similar lintels, triple keys, and nine-pane sashes also with thick glazing bars.
Inside, the front room contains end fireplaces, each with panelled pilasters and a lintel featuring a fluted key, along with a breast that has fluted angle pilasters. There is some tall fielded panelling with a panelled dado rail. The dogleg staircase has a cut string with column-on-vase balusters and a ramped handrail, along with dado panelling.
