Description
This is a house, later used as shops, dating from the mid to late 16th century, with alterations made subsequently. The building is constructed of brick with a timber-framed facade and has a double-span tile roof with brick stacks. It follows a double-depth plan and is in an Elizabethan style. The house is two storeys high and has a three-window front. The ground floor has been stuccoed, with a top frieze supported by two brackets, likely originally with a gabled attic above. A central shop window contains eight panes and a ventilation grille above, flanked by entrances, with a further entrance at the left end featuring a blind overlight; a smaller window is located at the right end. The first floor has four-pane sash windows with eight panes in moulded frames. A stack is located to the left end. The timber framing includes shaped herringbone bracing, with some panels containing thin muntins, possibly originally glazed, and quatrefoils to the frieze. The rear of the building has a steep roof, with a lower, gabled cross wing to the right, and varied window openings, mainly casements. Inside, there are chamfered beams; the left end of the house contains an open-well staircase with stick balusters and turned newels.
