Description
This milepost, located approximately 300 yards east-south-east of the football ground, dates from around 1815 to 1819. It is made of cast iron and features splayed sides with an inscribed top that reads in relief: "London 139, Shifnal 6, Salop 11 m 6 fur." The Holyhead Road Commission authorized Thomas Telford to improve the Holyhead Road from London in 1815, with the improvements taking place from 1815 to 1835. The section from Shrewsbury to Wolverhampton was constructed before 1819 by contractor Henry Williams. This cast iron milepost may have been produced by the Coalbrookdale Company, which also made similar mileposts along the Holyhead Road in Wellington and Watling Street in Wrockwardine.
