Description

Arleston Manor House is a 17th century timber-framed house with a gabled plain tile roof, located in Wellington. The building has two storeys and an attic, featuring a south-east front with two wide gabled bays and gable ends dated 1614 and 1630, with the right-hand bay set back. The first and second floors are jettied on moulded bressummers, while the ground storey displays close vertical studding and the first storey has diagonal studding. There are two and three-light moulded shallow oriels supported by carved brackets, with carved arcaded panels beneath the first storey windows. A modern glazed door is located off centre, leading to an open wooden porch. Much of the timber framing on this side has been rebuilt.

On the south-west side, there are three bays with similar jettied windows on console brackets. The rear (north-west) features a gabled and jettied section on carved brackets, with the right-hand side projecting and the left-hand corner post adorned with cable moulding.

Inside, the ground floor room boasts a remarkable early 17th century moulded plaster ceiling, divided into three parts by plastered beams, with moulded surrounds and pendants decorated with heraldic devices, animals, pomegranates, and a figure said to represent James I on the wall. There is a stone chimney piece with an ovolo moulded chamfer leading to a Tudor arch, along with panelling featuring a fluted frieze. An adjoining room has a moulded plaster frieze and a chamfered chimney bressummer, while another ground floor room includes a chamfered chimney bressummer and ceiling beams with stops. Arleston Manor was formerly a hunting seat of the Lords Forester and is traditionally believed to have been built as a hunting lodge for James I.
