Description
The Old Hall, a preparatory school, is a building dating from around the 16th century. It features a timber-framed structure with closely spaced vertical studs and a tiled roof with gabled ends. The building has two storeys and a two-window range, with 19th-century three-light casements, some of which have hexagonal panes, and brick stacks at the ends.
To the left (east) is an 18th-century rendered brick extension that has a parapet gable end with mullion and transom casements set in segmental arched openings. At the rear (southeast) of this wing, there is a timber-framed section that dates from the 17th century or earlier, which is roughcast and features 19th-century casements with hexagonal panes.
To the right (west) of the main range is a 19th-century extension that also has close-set studding and may be a rebuild of an earlier structure, as indicated by two carved concrete brackets at the eaves. This extension has one storey and an attic, with a three-window range of casements featuring hexagonal panes, and attic windows at eaves level with half-hipped gables. The west end of this extension is roughcast and includes a gothic window in the gable.
A plaque on the building states, "Built in 1480 by Edward Forester. Used as a school since the early 1800s."
