Description
Twyford School is a private school that incorporates an earlier house, originally built in the late 18th century. It became a preparatory school in 1809, with wings added to the sides and rear, and upper and lower school facilities added around 1819. The dining hall and kitchens were constructed in the 1840s, and a chapel was added in 1869. In the late 19th century, a main hall and linking buildings between school rooms were built, followed by a memorial library added to the upper school in 1922.
The building is made of brick, featuring some chequer-work, with old plain tile and slate roofs. The front of the original house is two stories and has an attic, consisting of three bays. There is an early 19th-century two-bay, two-story wing that is slightly set back to the left. A central brick Doric porch with an arched opening and key blocks is present, along with five 18th-century 12-pane sash windows with gauged brick arches. The eaves are dentilled, and the hipped roof has three hipped two-light dormers and a large stack behind the ridge to the right. The addition features two French windows with segmental heads, one of which is wide, and above it is a large 15-pane sash window with a blind box, along with a 12-pane sash in the right bay, with a hipped roof.
Inside, behind the front on the ground floor, there is an 18th-century hall in the left two bays, featuring a staircase designed in an unusual 18th-century style.
