Description
Eastgate House is an early 19th century townhouse, now a residential home. It is constructed of red brick in a Flemish bond pattern and has a slate roof with stone coping to the gable ends and brick chimney stacks. The building is three storeys and three bays wide, with single-storey wings extending on either side. The central entrance features a six-panel door within a doorcase with pilasters, an entablature, and a rectangular fanlight. The sash windows are 20th century wooden replacements; the ground floor windows to each side are tripartite in design with gauged keyblocked lintels. The first floor has 8-over-8 paned sashes to the outer bays and a 6-over-6 paned sash in the centre, all under keyblocked lintels with pronounced cills. The second floor is lower and has 6-over-3 paned sashes in each bay, with pronounced cills set directly below a plain eaves band. The flanking wings have slightly projecting central bays with windows set under shallow segmental arches. The rear elevation mirrors the front in proportions, with 20th century windows and painted gauged lintels. A two-storey bay is advanced to the left and includes a chimney, with windows under gauged lintels. A single-storey extension is located to the central bay. The interior was remodelled in the late 20th century for conversion to a residential home, but the original plan remains intact, and the ground floor main rooms have panelling below the windows. The building is an early 19th century townhouse with well-proportioned windows.
