Description
The mile post located south-south-east of Wrekin Hospital dates from around 1815 to 1819. It is made of cast iron and features splayed sides and a top that is inscribed in relief with the distances to London (140 miles) and Shifnal, Salop (10 miles and 8 furlongs). The Holyhead Road Commission authorized Thomas Telford to improve the Holyhead Road from London in 1815, with the improvements taking place between 1815 and 1835. This particular section, from Shrewsbury to Wolverhampton, was constructed before 1819 by contractor Henry Williams. The cast iron post was likely produced by the Coalbrookdale Company, similar to other posts along Watling Street in Wrockwardine and Wellington.
