Description
No. 1 Market Square is a timber-framed building dating from the late 16th century to early 17th century. It features diagonal bracing and plastered infill panels, topped by a plain tile roof with gabled ends. The left-hand return gable juts out on curved brackets. The building has two storeys and a three-window range. The first floor has 18th and 19th century sash windows with glazing bars. There are two symmetrical jettied gables adorned with 19th century openwork bargeboards that include finials and pendants. The ground floor is dominated by a large 19th century shop front, which has narrow end pilasters and a crenellated fascia. The right-hand (west) end wall is faced in brick from the 18th or 19th century and features painted imitation timber framing, along with a large brick chimney stack on the side of the gable.
