Palmers' Guildhall, now Magistrates Court. Late C14 timber aisled hall, encased in brick, c1768. By TF Pritchard. Brick; ashlar plinth; plain tile roof. 2-storeys; 6-window range: 9/6 sashes having "Gothick" glazing in pointed heads, under gauged brick pointed arches, the four sashes to the right having heraldic lights. Brick modillioned, moulded stone cornice, and parapet with stone coping. Entrance to centre left: 8 fielded-panel door with round head, in round-headed panelled case with architrave, under moulded flat hood and enriched frieze, on banded, clustered-shaft pilasters; five 12/6 sashes under gauged brick pointed arches. To left, 2-storey coach house, now dwelling, has 2 circular lights with cross glazing bars, in gauged brick surrounds. Moulded stone eaves; Welsh slate roof; ornate wood cupola (a copy of that on the Butter Cross). To right, double plank doors with overlight in boarded panel, under gauged brick arch; to left, C20 plank door with "Gothick" glazed overlight in plain door case under gauged brick pointed arch. 2 light window with "gothic" glazed head under gauged brick pointed arch, to left. INTERIOR: retains largely intact C14 hall with original C14 roof with cusped slanting queen posts. Gothic doorcase, with triple shafts and frieze with quartrefoils, added c1768.
