Description
47, 48, and 49 Mill Street are a house and cottages located in Ludlow, dating from the late 16th century and the 19th century. The buildings feature vertical weatherboarding on a timber frame and have a Welsh slate roof, with some composite tiles on the front pitch and plain tiles on the rear. There is a brick stack at the back. The structure has a two-unit plan and stands two stories tall with a two-window range.
On the left side, there is a two-light casement window and a tripartite window with a central casement. To the right, the entrance to No. 47 features a 19th-century, four-panel door in a plain doorcase. To the left, there is a 18th-century double, canted bay window with broad glazing bars, and further left, an entrance to a passage has a beaded doorcase, all situated under an overhang with a boarded soffit. The passage to the rear includes timber-framing with brick-on-edge infill on the right side and exposed ceiling beams beneath a plastered and boarded ceiling. There is a plank door in a beaded case to the right and a small recess under an oak lintel to the left.
The rear has a further range with a blocked doorway under a segmental arch and a canted metal casement. No. 48 has a 20th-century door (originally from the 19th century) and casements on the first and second floors. No. 49, also from the 19th century, features a central plank door with a tripartite light to the right and another plank door to the left leading to a scullery, with three lights above and a brick end stack to the left.
Inside No. 47, the ground floor has a beam and plaster ceiling with simple ornamentation, while No. 48 contains an early 19th-century staircase.
