Description

Russell House is an early 18th-century house located on Mill Street, Ludlow. It is a three-storey and attic building with a five-window front, constructed primarily of brick with a Welsh slate roof and brick end stacks. The windows are 6/6 sashes with cambered heads, broad glazing bars, and gauged brick segmental arches incorporating painted stone key blocks, all set beneath a moulded sill band. Similar window arrangements are present on the upper floors and in the gabled attic dormers, which feature 3/6 sashes with cambered heads and moulded wood eaves. A fielded-panel door with a fanlight is centrally located within a round-headed case, topped with a moulded open pediment on fluted consoles and moulded pilasters. To the left of the door are four 6/6 sashes also set in moulded cases above the sill band. The original window frames and much of the early glass remain, representing a rare survival. The left return side is of rubble construction with brick flues. The rear features a brick upper storey with 20th-century windows in 19th-century frames set within a segmental arch in a timber-framed panel. A further two-storey rubble wing, known as Russell House, extends to the rear, containing a 20th-century window and an 8/8 sash to the first floor, as well as a through passage beneath a brick segmental arch.
