Description

No. 21 High Street is a commercial building that was constructed as offices in 1892 by AE Lloyd Oswell. It is designed in the Flemish Revival style and features a brick structure with ashlar dressings and a plain tiled roof. The building stands three storeys high with an attic and consists of four bays.

The ground floor has a granite front with two outer doors that have segmental moulded arches, flanked by fluted shafts and topped with arcaded overlights. Above the central window is a heavy cornice with a strapwork frieze and a central plaque inscribed with "Shropshire Fire Office" and "Shropshire and North Wales," supported by moulded console brackets.

The first floor showcases banded brick and stone, divided into a 1-2-1 arrangement by pilasters. The outer bays contain two-light transomed windows, while the central section features paired segmentally-arched windows within a stressed architrave. A moulded cornice runs above, leading to stone transomed windows on the upper level. The frieze is adorned with foliate swags, topped by an egg-and-dart eaves cornice.

At the roofline, there is a balustraded parapet on either side of an ornate central gable, which is arranged in three tiers and topped with a high pedimented panel displaying the Salop arms.
