Description

Owen's Mansion is a house that has been converted into a shop, dated 1569. It features a timber-framed structure with a plain tiled roof and stands three storeys tall with a two-window range. The entire ground floor has an inserted shopfront that extends to the adjacent building, No. 25. The first floor showcases close studding with a middle rail and arched tension bracing, along with two late 19th-century oriel windows that have mullions and transoms, each with four lights and decorative lead cames. The second storey jetties out, supported by a moulded bressumer, and is adorned with decorative panelling that includes a continuous series of cusped quatrefoils. Twisted shafts are superimposed on vertical members, with the quatrefoils recessed in the horizontal sections. An inscribed plaque in the centre reads: "Erected by Richard Owen the Elder gentleman anno domini 1569." There are two three-light oriel windows beneath projecting gables, which feature herringbone struts and enriched barge-boards with figures as finials. A stack is located at the rear left and on the right-hand gable. The building has been part of a department store since at least the early 20th century.
