Description
1 and 2 Mardol Head is a purpose-built office building from 1903, featuring an ashlar facade over brick and a Welsh slate roof. The structure is two-and-a-half storeys tall and has a curved corner at the intersection of Mardol Head and High Street, with three windows facing Mardol Head. Designed in the Free Renaissance style, it includes an inserted shop front on the Mardol Head elevation and an oriel window with leaded lights, a cornice, and a shallow scrolled pediment above.
The building features small paired mullioned and transomed windows, along with inscribed lettering that reads "Royal Insurance Company" on the half-storey below. To the left, there is a gabled dormer and an axial stack. The left-hand bay is articulated by pilasters and has mullioned windows on each floor. A cupola with a ribbed dome is set back and supported by turned wood balusters.
An oriel window sits over the door at the corner, featuring a curved moulded base and inscribed "R.I.S." above. A full-height mullioned and transomed window spans the curve, flanked by leaded lights with scrolled pediments and topped with a ribbed domed leaded roof. There is a rainwater head to the left with a date, and the building has a moulded eaves cornice with finials. A stack is located on the left-hand gable. This building is a striking and skillfully designed feature at this important corner site.
