Description
No. 17 High Street is a house that has been converted into a shop. It dates from the late 16th century and features a timber-framed structure with a plain tiled roof. The building stands three storeys tall and has a two-window range. A projecting shop front was added in the late 20th century, with windows that continue around the corner to Grope Lane. The decorative framing above the shop front creates a herringbone pattern, with quatrefoils set into the horizontal members and twisted shafts placed on the verticals. There are also two full-height windows that were inserted later. The upper storey was raised in the late 19th century and features mock framing that imitates the original pattern below. At the rear, there is a lower wing facing Grope Lane, which includes a moulded bressumer and herringbone studding, as well as an enriched bressumer across the rear gable.
