Description

The stable block, located approximately 175 meters north-east of Leighton Hall, was built in 1778 and remodelled in 1888, with early and mid-20th century additions and alterations. It is constructed of red brick and features plain tile roofs with raised verges. The original square plan surrounds a central courtyard and was extended to the south in the late 19th century. The building has two levels, with a single-storey south range that includes a dentilled eaves cornice. The front features a round-headed archway with a raised keystone and pointed stone voussoirs, flanked by oculi that display stone inscription panels; the left panel has the initials "JK" and the Kynnersley family coat-of-arms, while the right panel shows the date "1778". Above this is a roundel, and the pyramidal roof is topped by a clock tower with an octagonal wooden cupola and lead cap. The left and right ranges have been converted to domestic accommodation, with blind round-headed stable arches and early and mid-20th century casements, as well as contemporary red brick ridge stacks. Inside the courtyard, the cambered arches of the north range have been infilled with 20th century casements, while the east range retains several segmental-headed cast-iron windows. The interiors of all ranges have been significantly altered during the 20th century.
