Description

The stable block, dating from the early 18th century, is located on the High Street in Much Hadham village. It is a red brick building with tiled and hipped roofs. The main south-facing block is rectangular, with lower wings attached to the north. The facade has four windows, a single window in the centre, and then four windows again. The central carriageway has a segmental arch flanked by pilasters; above is a fixed nine-pane sash window topped by a plain pediment. The sides of the central block feature pilasters and a deep wooden cornice with modillion detailing. A chequered floor band is present. Original six-over-six sashes remain on the ground floor, while the first floor features fixed nine-pane windows.

A central clock tower is constructed of an octagonal peristyle of fluted pilasters on a weatherboarded base with a modillion cornice and an ogee-shaped lead dome, topped by a ball and wrought iron weathervane. Wrought iron double gates are located to the south of the archway, and large eight-panel wooden doors are positioned on either side of the passageway.

The north wings were added in the later 18th century and are one-and-a-half storeys high. The east side of these wings has three hipped, louvred dormers and a moulded bresummer above the ground floor stable entrance. The west side features four dormers overlooking the courtyard, with tile hanging to the sides, and a variety of modern windows. The road-facing elevation has a moulded wooden cornice and a hipped roof attic with louvred windows.
