Description
North Leys is a house built around 1720 and later. It is constructed of red brick and features a low slate roof, with old tiles on the north side. The building has two storeys and seven windows. The original part of the house has a symmetrical five-window front made of chequered brick, with end pilasters, a floor band, and a stepped eaves cornice. The central entrance is an early 19th-century half-glazed door adorned with an Adam style fanlight and an original flat hood supported by leaf-carved consoles. The first and second floors have 6/6 flush sash windows with rubbed brick lintels.
In 1824, a one-window addition was made on the north side, designed in plain brick with similar pilasters, a band, and a cornice. This addition features a recessed ground floor triple-hung sash window and a first-floor 6/6 sash window with a fluted keystone. An early 20th-century one-window addition was added on the south side, constructed in chequered brick with matching details, although the ground and first-floor triple-hung sashes are flush and have horns.
The rear elevation includes a late 18th-century central porch with segmental arch openings and 'Chinese Chippendale' latticework frames. There are triple-hung sashes on the ground floor to the north and south. Inside, the house boasts a well-preserved panelled interior from around 1720 and a central staircase in a rectangular well.
