Description
The Red Lion Inn is a 16th-century timber-framed inn that has been extended in the 17th century and altered in the early 19th and early 20th centuries. The street-facing side is roughcast on a stucco plinth and features a steep old tile roof. The building is arranged in an L shape, with a long section extending back from the street behind the southern bay. It has two storeys, a broad coach entrance with quadrant corners, and exposed ceiling beams, with the rear section being higher. On the ground floor, there are early 19th-century triple-hung sash windows, while the first floor has four early 20th-century triple casement windows. There is a fluted early 20th-century Tuscan doorcase towards the north. The rear elevation includes two early 17th-century gable ends with 4/4 horizontal sash windows. An extension on the north side features a central red brick gabled section from the 16th century, complete with an external chimneystack and flanked by narrow lights. This section continues westward in a tall brick boundary wall that dates from the 16th to 19th centuries. The southern range, which includes Nos 2 and 6, has a modern exterior over the timber frame. Inside, No 1 contains re-used 16th to 17th-century oak panelling in the front room, while No 4 features a well-preserved early 17th-century stairwell with 18th-century barleytwist balustrading.
