Description
The Old Post Office is a cottage that was originally built in the mid-17th century and later extended and remodeled in the mid-19th century. It features a timber frame with painted brick infill and additions, topped with machine tile roofs that have ornamental cresting, fretted bargeboards, and pointed finials on the gables. The building has yellow brick ridge and end stacks.
Originally designed with a two-cell plan, it was extended on both sides during the mid-19th century. The structure has one storey and an attic, with framing consisting of square panels, three from the cill to the wall-plate, and V-struts from the collar to the front gable end. The mid-19th century windows include cast-iron patterned casements, with one on each floor of the front gable end; the ground floor window is set in an oriel. The 19th-century dormers on the 17th-century part and the left extension also feature fretted bargeboards and pointed finials. The entrance is through a nail-studded boarded door located in the angle between the 17th-century range and the left extension.
The interior has not been inspected but is likely to be of interest. There is a mid-20th century single-storey addition at the rear, which is not considered to have special architectural interest.
