Description
The churchyard wall of the Church of St Mary is an early 18th-century structure that was repaired in the mid- to late 19th century. It is made of red brick and encloses a roughly circular churchyard, standing between 0.8 meters and 2.5 meters high, with the highest point located at the south-west corner. The top of the wall was rebuilt in 19th-century purplish brown brick on the west and part of the north sides. There are steps leading to Leighton Hall at the south-west corner, flanked by ball finials, which are likely from the 19th century. Additionally, there is a lychgate at the north-east corner that dates to 1920, but this is not included in the listing. The shape and elevated position of the churchyard indicate that the Church of St Mary may have early origins, and a priest is recorded at Leighton in the Domesday Book.
