Description
5 and 6 Broad Street is a pair of shops and dwellings, now functioning as a cafe, dating from the early 17th century. The building features a timber-frame and plaster construction with a slate roof that has a steeper pitch on the right side. It has a three-bay plan and stands three stories tall with a three-window range. To the left, there is an early 19th-century 8/8 sash window, alongside two early 19th-century 2/2 sashes and a combination of 8/8 and 2/2 canted bay windows. The ground floor has 19th-century shopfronts, and there is a six-panel door with a plain overlight located at the far right, all sheltered by a deep overhang supported by cast-iron columns, one of which carries a chamfered carved head likely from an arcade post.
At the rear, there are 18th and 19th-century two- and three-story ranges that include massive ceiling beams. The three-story range and cross-wing are constructed of rubble and brick, with some elements dating back to the 17th century. The rear facade features a two-window range with 20th-century fenestration, including leaded lights on the ground floor, double doors, and windows. The gable displays 17th-century timber-framing, and the various windows include leaded lights and some old glass, all set beneath brick segmental arches.
