Description
68 and 69 Broad Street are houses that have been converted into a bank. They feature an 18th-century front but have a core that dates back to the 17th century. The exterior is finished in stucco, with a slate roof at the front and a 20th-century plain tile roof at the rear. The building is three stories high and has a five-window range, with 20th-century 6/6 sash windows set in broad beaded cases on the first and second floors. There is a deep moulded cornice and a modillioned eaves cornice. The ground floor has a 20th-century entrance and window arrangement beneath a moulded cornice.
On the Market Street side, the building also has three stories and an attic, with a 17th-century timber-frame structure that is stuccoed at the ground floor. This side has a two-window range featuring 20th-century 4-light casements in box framing with passing braces, and a central enriched console under the jetty. The second floor mirrors this design, with a returned eaves cornice and a 20th-century 2-light casement above. The ground floor includes two 3-light windows with casements.
Inside, the building retains massive plates and ceiling beams. There is a large late 19th-century gable wing at the rear, constructed of brick with a plain tile roof. The east gable features a 19th-century mullion light with glazing bars and cambered heads, and large joists and a timber plate are visible in the rear gable. The west front has 20th-century fenestration.
