Description
The Angel Hotel is an early 17th-century timber-frame and plaster shop and dwelling, now a hotel. It is located on Broad Street in Ludlow.
The building is three storeys high and has a two-window front. It features two 18th-century bowed oriels with lead roofs and plastered coved underhangs, along with three 20th-century leaded-light sash windows. The front is constructed with chevron-braced box framing, set beneath an enriched bressummer. Two moulded wood mullion and transom casements with leaded lights are set between the chevron-braced panels, and are supported by enriched consoles. Upper studs suggest a change in roof pitch, and there are wood modillion eaves. The ground floor has three late 19th-century plain sashes in moulded cases. To the right, there are recessed eight-panelled double doors between moulded posts with a chamfered lintel, all under a deep jetty with chamfered ceiling beams and cast-iron brackets. A passage to the rear has exposed ceiling beams and joists, along with a 6/6 sash window from the 18th century.
A rear wing has a jettied second floor with enriched consoles and early 19th-century round-headed 3/3 sash windows with central casements. A further wing, two storeys and an attic high, has 20th-century metal casements, with wood casements to the gables.
The interior ground floor front contains some 17th-century timber framing, a 19th-century fireplace with a moulded 4-centred arch, and some exposed timbers to the first floor.
