Description
SJ 32 NW OSWESTRY RURAL C.P. -
6/138 Barn approx. 15m - north-west of The Fields
GV II
Barn, incorporating substantial remains of open-hall house. Early to mid-C19 barn incorporating one bay of C14 or C15 open-hall house. Barn: on east-west axis, a mixture of regularly coursed limestone rubble, red brick and weatherboarded construction with a slate roof (hipped at west end) incorporates in its side walls 2 cruck-framed trusses of a medieval hall aligned north-south. Interior: 2 truncated base cruck trusses probably representing solar or service bay of open hall; both are chamfered with arch braces (now missing on northern truss) supporting cambered tie beam; this has a beam running north-south supported by post and carved bracket on southern truss but rest of roof structure (possibly of crown-post type) has been destroyed ; the north face of the lower tie beam to the southern truss has 8 mortice holes marking the position of the joists of the former floored bay and on the bottom face is a further series of mortice holes marking the position of a former close-studded or plank and muntin screen; to left and right and cut into the north side of the cruck truss are square-headed doorways with reverse ogee arches, marking the entrances from the hall into the solar or service bay. At right-angles to east of northern truss is part of a cruck blade re-used to support a loft in the C19 barn.
