Description

This barn, located approximately 15 meters north-west of The Fields, dates from the early to mid-19th century and incorporates significant remains of a 14th or 15th-century open-hall house. The barn is oriented on an east-west axis and features a mix of regularly coursed limestone rubble, red brick, and weatherboarded construction, topped with a hipped slate roof at the west end.

Inside, there are two truncated base cruck trusses that likely represent the solar or service bay of the original open hall. Both trusses are chamfered and feature arch braces, although the northern truss is missing its braces. These trusses support a cambered tie beam, which has a beam running north-south, supported by a post and a carved bracket on the southern truss. Much of the roof structure, possibly of crown-post type, has been lost. The lower face of the tie beam on the southern truss has eight mortice holes indicating the positions of the joists from the former floored bay. Additionally, there are more mortice holes on the bottom face that mark where a close-studded or plank and muntin screen once stood.

To the left and right of the northern cruck truss are square-headed doorways with reverse ogee arches, which provided access from the hall into the solar or service bay. A cruck blade, repurposed to support a loft, is located at right angles to the east of the northern truss.
