Description
The Ball Mill is a Grade II listed building located in Oswestry Rural, primarily dating from the early 19th century, though it may include parts of an earlier mill. The structure was extended in the mid-19th century and again around 1900. It is constructed from uncoursed limestone rubble with red brick dressings, and the newer sections are built in red brick with a slate roof. The mill has three storeys, but only the ground and first floors are lit from the front. It features a dentilled eaves cornice and a seven-bay front, with a central section that has a gabled break and a wooden gabled hoist projection. The windows and doors on both floors are segmental-headed, including those on the right end, which was formerly a domestic space with an end stack.
At the rear, a mill race runs suspended in an iron channel above two wooden overshot wheels with iron spokes. These wheels are connected by cog mechanisms that operate the sluice plate inside the mill. The interior retains much of its original equipment, including millstones, grinding and lifting gear, and a series of corn bins on the top floor. As of the last survey in July 1985, the mill was mainly used for preparing cattle food, with the millstones typically driven by electricity. The flat-roofed addition from around 1900 is not considered to have special architectural interest.
