Description
Redwith Cottages is a house dating from the 14th or 15th century, which was re-modelled in the 19th century and underwent extensive alterations in the late 20th century. The building features rendered brick that conceals and partly replaces a cruck-framed structure, with a slate roof and integral end stacks. The original layout likely consisted of a 2-bay open hall with a service bay on the left side; this area was later floored over, and the right-hand bay of the hall was demolished. The service bay was subsequently used as a cowhouse and hayloft.
The house is two storeys high and has late 20th-century neo-Georgian windows on either side of a contemporary central door, with gabled half-dormers above. Inside, the raising of the eaves in the 19th century has preserved two true cruck trusses, which are exposed in No. 2. These trusses have collars and an Alcock apex-type B, with the right-hand truss also being arch-braced. The dividing wall between Nos. 1 and 2 features close studding and two infilled doorways that indicate the position of a former screens passage. The timber frame, consisting of square panels, is partly preserved in the former back wall. The main ground-floor room in No. 2 has a ceiling with a chamfered cross-beam and heavy joists that display ogee stops.
