Description

The Navigation Inn and attached warehouse is an inn and warehouse built around 1796, with later additions and alterations. It features red brick that is rendered and painted on the front, topped with a pantile roof and two 19th-century purplish red brick ridge stacks on the inn. The building is L-shaped, with the warehouse flanking the canal. It has two storeys and a dentilled eaves cornice.

The inn, located on the left, has an angled north end with panelled double doors beneath a 20th-century porch. There are large fixed-light windows on both sides of the entrance and a 20th-century gabled dormer that breaks the eaves. The road front has 19th-century casements on either side of a 20th-century door, which is set under a gabled timber porch; the ground floor windows have segmental heads.

The attached warehouse on the right features a segmental-headed doorway and two 19th-century casements directly below the eaves, similar to those on the inn. There are also segmental-headed doorways on the ground and first floors facing the canal, although the ground floor doorway is now blocked.

This section of the Ellesmere Canal, which opened in 1796 to connect with the Montgomeryshire Canal at Carreghofa, was used to transport limestone from the quarries at Llanymynech and became part of the Shropshire Union in 1846. The building is included for its group value.
