Description

The Barn at Pant Glas Isaf is a timber-framed former hall-house, now used as a barn. It features box-framed construction with jointed cruck trusses and has a corrugated asbestos roof. The barn stands on a tall limestone rubble plinth that varies in height from 1.5 meters to 2.3 meters on the southeast side. The southwest gable end and the southwestern timber-framed infill panels of both long walls have been rebuilt using early brick that dates from the late 17th century or early 18th century. The central section of framing on the southwest side is covered with horizontal weather-boarding, while the right-hand section is clad in corrugated iron sheeting.

The barn has a large open entrance at the center, which is raised and accessed by stepped rubble from the left. There is also a boarded entrance to the left. The far left bay features an open entrance with modern brick to the left and a loading bay above. On the northwest side, there is a mix of exposed brick-infilled timber framing on the right section, vertical boarding on the left section, and an off-center section rebuilt in limestone rubble. This latter section has an open entrance with a timber lintel and another opening to the right.

Attached to the northeast gable end, slightly set back, is a lower single-bay 19th-century rubble addition. This addition has a modern cart entrance with a concrete lintel on its southeast side and two boarded windows in the gable, featuring exposed timber lintels.

Inside, the primary house consists of four bays with an open interior that showcases large jointed cruck trusses, original purlins, and two tiers of curved wind braces. The central (hall) truss has a unique arrangement where its collar is supported by a long chamfered post resting on a low tie-beam. There is significant evidence of smoke blackening throughout the interior.
