Description

This is a long single-storey farm outbuilding at Hengoed, dating from the medieval period. It features a slate roof and walls that are partly made of stone, with some remnants of timber framing, although much of the structure has been rebuilt, particularly at the rear in blockwork.

On the left side, there are two doorways followed by a tiny window, then another doorway, two square windows, another doorway, two more square windows, and an additional window. At the left end, there is a two-bay cart shed that is positioned at right angles to the main building. This cart shed is two storeys high, constructed of stone, and has a slate roof. It features two cambered brick-headed arches, each with a small window above, and at the left end, there is a lean-to that was formerly a pigsty.

In total, the building has seven bays. Although most of the wall framing has been removed, five cruck trusses remain, which define the four medieval bays of the inner room, the two-bay hall, and the outer room. There is also a later framed truss at the right end, with the outer bays defined by masonry gables. The central hall truss is heavily arch-braced, and some old purlins with wind-bracing survive here, along with fragments of possibly original framing. Additionally, there are remains of a later framed chimney. The cart shed includes stairs leading to a loft within the right arch.
