Description

This is a farm outbuilding, likely dating to the 17th century or earlier, with significant alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is constructed of coursed rubble gritstone with a Welsh slate roof. The east-facing elevation features a single-story section with an overloft at the north end, and an attached two-story, single-bay wing at the north end. The main range is three bays wide, with C20 boarded double sliding doors to the south. It also has a C20 eight-pane window and a blocked 17th-century doorway in the centre bay. A single sliding door is located at the north end. The north gable has a blocked 17th-century doorway, now filled with a C20 four-pane inwardly pivoting window. The south gable has a blocked taking-in doorway. The west elevation has three C20 windows; the outer ones are eight-pane, and the central one is ten-pane.

Inside, the building retains three cruck trusses. One truss, located at the south end, has had its collar and tie beams removed, though the yoke remains. The original ridge purlin has been replaced, and the replacement collar extends beyond the cruck blades to support new purlins. The remaining trusses have collars and yokes, with dovetail lap joints into the faces of the cruck blades. The truss type is classified as Apex type A according to Alcock's classification system. The attached single-bay wing contains a stone staircase leading to a plain first-floor doorway above a C20 sliding ground floor door.
