Description
This farm outbuilding, located to the south-west of Spring House Farmhouse, dates from the 17th century or earlier, with some remodelling occurring in the late 19th century. It serves as part cowhouse and part store and is constructed from coursed rubble Coal Measures Sandstone and brick, featuring roof coverings of stone slate, pantile with stone slated eaves courses, and Welsh slate.
The north-east elevation is a single storey with overlofts and consists of six bays, two of which have been remodelled, and there is an offshut at the north-west end. The building has three plain doorways with plain planked doors.
Inside, the roof is supported by four cruck trusses that carry a single back purlin and a ridge purlin, which is set diagonally and clasped by the cruck blades. The cruck trusses include wind braces and originally featured tie, collar, and yoke beams. Late 19th-century trusses have been added at the south-east end and between the two cruck trusses within the remodelled two bays at the north-west end, which are in separate ownership from the remaining four bays.
