Description
Hawthorne Farmhouse is a house built in the late 18th century, with some alterations and additions made in the 20th century. It is constructed from coursed squared and rubble Coal Measures Sandstone, featuring ashlar dressings, quoins, a coped gable with moulded kneelers, gable stacks, and a roof covered with Welsh slate and stone slate. The house has an L-shaped plan, with a 20th-century infill extension at the angle of the two ranges.
The southeast elevation is two storeys high and consists of five bays, presenting a formal and symmetrical appearance. The central entrance features a massive stone surround and a plank door with a glazed light at the top. On either side of the door are stacked two-light flush-mullioned windows with 6-pane casements. Broad band courses link the heads of the windows, with the ground floor course stepping over the doorway as a hood mould. The northeast gable includes a late 18th-century two-light flush-mullioned window on the first floor, a 20th-century two-light glazing-bar casement, and a blocked doorway at ground-floor level.
