Description

Spring House Farmhouse is a mid-17th century farmhouse with late 18th century additions and alterations, as well as 19th century remodelling. It is constructed of rubble and coursed squared Coal Measures Sandstone, featuring ashlar dressings, a coped gable to the north ridge, and gable chimneys made of brick and stone, topped with a stone slated roof. The house is designed in an L-plan layout.

The west elevation has two storeys and four bays, with an advanced gabled crosswing at the south end. The doorway in the northern range has a massive quoined surround and lintel, located almost at the junction of the main range and crosswing. Above this doorway is a 2-light flush-mullioned window with side-hung casements. To the north of the doorway, there is an additional bay defined by quoins, which is now part of an extended wall. This bay features stacked window openings, with the lower being an altered 2-light 20th century window beneath a concrete lintel, and above it, a 2-light flush-mullioned window with side-hung casements. Beyond the quoin line, the masonry changes from thin rubble to coursed squared work, with stacked 3-light flush-mullioned windows that have slightly advanced heads and side-hung casement frames.

The south elevation was remodelled in the late 19th century and features a central doorway with a deep lintel, flanked by stacked 2-light windows on either side, which have 20th century casement frames with a top-hung light. The north gable facing the road includes a 2-light flush-mullioned window that provides light to the attic.
