Description
The outbuilding to the east of Mansion House Farmhouse is a farm outbuilding dating from the 16th century, with additions and alterations from the 18th and 19th centuries. It is constructed from coursed rubble coal measures sandstone and features a corrugated sheet roof. The south elevation is single storey, while the north elevation is also single storey but includes overlofts, as it is built into a bank. Each elevation has three plain doorways; the northern doorways provide access to the overlofts, while the southern doorways are planked stable doors that lead to a full-length offshut, which is now part of the main structure.
Inside, the building contains two massive cruck trusses, each with a blade face dimension exceeding two feet at its widest point. The roof is supported by a single purlin with windbraces, and the tie and collar beams are integrated into the crucks, with the tie beams extending into the walls. The ridge is supported by the head of the truss. The offshut on the south side is partially supported by posts that are notched onto the outer faces of the southern cruck blades, and there is an intermediate aisle post, which has been cut, that carries a cambered tie beam resting on the outer wall plate of the offshut.
