Description

Mansion House Farmhouse is a farmhouse located in the parish of Eckington, dating from the early 17th century with later additions in the late 17th century. It was restored between 1981 and 1983. The building is constructed from coursed coal measures sandstone and features quoins, coped gables, gable and side wall stacks, and a stone slated roof. It has a T-plan layout and consists of at least two separate builds.

The south elevation stands two storeys with attics and has two bays. An advanced gabled range is present at the west end, featuring stacked recessed chamfered mullioned windows, all topped with hoodmoulds that have stops. The ground floor window, originally a 4-light window, now retains only a single mullion. There is a 3-light window on the first floor and a 2-light window in the attic. A doorway on the side range has a quoined surround, a massive lintel, and a planked 20th-century door, with the quoins on the west side partially obscured by the adjacent range. To the east of the doorway, a former 4-light recessed chamfered mullioned window now has only a single mullion remaining, also beneath a hoodmould with stops. The west side wall features a surviving 4-light chamfered mullioned window under a hoodmould, while the north rear wall has a 3-light window. Other openings in the building are recent additions.

A single-storey addition to the west connects the farmhouse to an adjacent barn. Inside, the principal range is divided by plank and muntin screens. The ground floor includes 17th-century square panelling that has been applied to the back of the panelling, along with remnants of plaster cornice moulds. The roof structure consists of tie beam trusses without collars or struts, supporting double purlins and a ridge purlin. During the restoration in 1980-83, part of a cruck truss was discovered in the north gable wall, along with a 3-light timber mullioned window.
