Description
This is a range of farm outbuildings located southeast of Carter Hall Farmhouse, dating from the mid to late 18th century, with some alterations made in the 20th century. The buildings are constructed from coursed rubble Coal Measures sandstone and feature stone slate roofs. The layout is shaped like an 'L', consisting of a lofted cowhouse on the west side and a taller stable on the east, which has a lower bay against its eastern gable.
The cowhouse has an east elevation with a nearly central inserted doorway, flanked by earlier doorways that are topped with massive lintels. There is an inserted window to the left of the left-side doorway and a single taking-in door leading to the loft. The north gable features stone steps leading to a quoined loft doorway, with a stone-framed window opening to the right and a blocked opening below. The south gable also has stone steps leading to a loft doorway.
The stable range has a north elevation with a quoined central doorway, a single light stone-framed window to the right, and an enlarged opening to the left that includes a louvred ventilator. There is a 2-light window to the loft with three-pane lights set within a stone surround. The eastern part of the stable has a stepped lower section with sheeted roofs, while the taller section has a deep doorway lintel and a small stone-framed side window.
The interiors have been altered, but the roof structure of the cowhouse appears to include some reused timbers from an earlier building. The cowhouse is depicted in a plan of the Carter Hall Estate surveyed by William Fairbairn in 1754. This range of outbuildings is part of a significant farmstead site associated with Carter Hall Farmhouse and exemplifies the building traditions and layout of mid-18th century farmsteads in this distinctive upland valley location. The site is particularly noteworthy for being little altered, as evidenced by the Fairbairn plan.
