Description

This is a farmhouse, dated 1670, with 20th-century additions and alterations. It is built of coursed squared gritstone with ashlar dressings, quoins, coped gables with moulded kneelers, ashlar ridge and gable stacks, and a Welsh slate roof. The west elevation is two storeys and attics, four bays wide. Originally, there was a doorway against the ridge stack, suggesting a lobby entrance. This doorway is now blocked, but retains a massive lintel and quoined surround. Coupled four-by-three-pane glazing bar sashes have been inserted, standing on a masonry base. A more recent doorway is located to the north of the blocked doorway. An altered three-light chamfered mullioned window is at the north end, while a single-light window from the 17th century sits to the south of the blocked doorway. A modern two-light casement sits at the west end, within an earlier surround. A string course runs along the elevation, stepping upwards over the original doorway. At the first floor, there are two unaltered three-light chamfered mullioned windows with drip moulds, a 17th-century single-light opening, and a later two-light chamfered mullioned window. Two gabled dormers feature coped gables, moulded kneelers, and ball finials at the gable apex, each containing a three-light chamfered mullioned window beneath a drip moulding. The north dormer’s apex bears a plaque inscribed ‘I M N 1670’, while the south dormer displays an 18th-century firemark. Most windows are leaded casements; those in the attics appear to be early. A rear extension and remodelling occurred in 1988.
