Description

Fallgate Mill is a water-powered corn mill dating to 1781, although it incorporates earlier fabric within its structure. It was restored in 1987-88. The mill is constructed of coursed rubble and ashlar gritstone, along with rubble carboniferous limestone, with quoins. The roof is covered with stone slate and pantile, with stone slated eaves. The building is an irregular L-shaped grouping, with the main range running east to west and an advanced range to the east. There is also a single-storey range to the east, built of brick with a stone slated roof. The south elevation features a central three-storey, three-bay range. It has a centrally positioned doorway with a massive surround and lintel inscribed 'E T S 1781'. Above the doorway is a small single opening, and to the west a wider opening, both with planked doors and deep lintels. A brick outbuilding to the west has a central planked shutter and a small four-pane window above. An advanced gable to the east range has a blocked ground-floor opening, a glazed first-floor taking-in opening, and a small single lancet light to the gable apex. The west elevation, facing the wheelpit, is of coursed rubble with two rectangular openings in the gable apex and one below it, along with a tall narrow opening to the south side. A restored overshot wheel with metal sideplates and timber buckets is set into the wheelpit, supplied by a metal pentrough. The interior, including the machinery, has been fully restored.
